8th Grade Buddies
Description: 8th Grade Buddies allows students to help out, guide, and facilitate learning with Gavin Central Elementary students. Eight graders fill out an application and are interviewed before being accepted into this program. Once selected, students travel to the elementary school where they are assigned a teacher. Within that teacher’s classroom, students help out in a variety of ways. They may help organize, read to students, help students with work, mediate conflicts, etc. The 8th Grade Buddies will attend “Leadership Lessons” to help prepare them to be successful peer role models. Some Buddies will be selected and further trained in one-on-one peer mentoring where they will be assigned to a specific student and use those peer mediation skills to help other students. These special roles will allow students to make further connections with younger students at Central and South who are in need of extra support or assistance in solving peer conflicts.
The program teaches responsibility, leadership, and social skills. Students are required to be passing all classes and must write a weekly reflection of their experience.
*Buddies applications and interviews were held in September. If you are new to the district and are interested in joining Buddies, please speak to one of the sponsors.
Who can join: 8th Graders
Activity Dates: Students will take a bus to Central Elementary school on Tuesdays throughout the year. Students will leave after 1st hour and be back at South before 7th hour.

Art Club is for students that are interested in having more time to work on their individual art ideas and explore materials they may not get to work with in Art class very much. Students can also use this club time to catch up on art projects they are behind on in Art class or to work on group activities with other club members.
Students interested in Art Club will be required to pay the Gavin South Middle School office a $20.00 club fee. Our first meeting will be on September 07, 2017 from 2:20 until 3:20 P.M. in the Art room at Gavin South. Students can take the 3:20 P.M. late bus or arrange transportation with a family member home.

Members of Gavin’s poetry club are writers, readers, and supportive critics. We enjoy expression and telling our truths. At most meetings, members share their work and encourage constructive feedback. Students of every grade are encouraged to join, regardless of whether they have ever written a poem. Poetry club is a great place to meet people, appreciate language, and develop creativity!
