8th Grade Buddies
Description: 8th Grade Buddies allows students to help out, guide, and facilitate learning with Gavin Central Elementary students. Eight graders fill out an application and are interviewed before being accepted into this program. Once selected, students travel to the elementary school where they are assigned a teacher. Within that teacher’s classroom, students help out in a variety of ways. They may help organize, read to students, help students with work, mediate conflicts, etc. The 8th Grade Buddies will attend “Leadership Lessons” to help prepare them to be successful peer role models. Some Buddies will be selected and further trained in one-on-one peer mentoring where they will be assigned to a specific student and use those peer mediation skills to help other students. These special roles will allow students to make further connections with younger students at Central and South who are in need of extra support or assistance in solving peer conflicts.
The program teaches responsibility, leadership, and social skills. Students are required to be passing all classes and must write a weekly reflection of their experience.
*Buddies applications and interviews were held in September. If you are new to the district and are interested in joining Buddies, please speak to one of the sponsors.

Members of Gavin’s poetry club are writers, readers, and supportive critics. We enjoy expression and telling our truths. At most meetings, members share their work and encourage constructive feedback. Students of every grade are encouraged to join, regardless of whether they have ever written a poem. Poetry club is a great place to meet people, appreciate language, and develop creativity!
